As the gardening season wraps up with colder nights on the horizon, it’s time to make the most of my harvest. Gardening in Zone 3 can be tough, with a short growing season, but I have a few tricks to ensure my tomatoes don’t go to waste. Here are three effective ways to ripen your tomatoes:
1. Sunny WindowsillPlace your tomatoes on a sunny windowsill. After soaking up some rays for a few days, they’ll be perfectly ripe and ready to enjoy!
2. Breathable ContainerUse a breathable container—like a plastic bag with holes, a paper bag, or a cardboard box. Just make sure not to crowd the tomatoes. This method captures the ethylene gas they naturally emit, speeding up the ripening process.
3. Add a BananaFor the quickest results, toss a banana into that breathable container. Bananas produce a high amount of ethylene gas, which will significantly enhance the ripening process of your tomatoes.
Give these methods a try and savor every last tomato before the season ends! Alternatively you can always enjoy fried green tomatoes or salsa verde.
